Barton Gold (BGD) has started drilling at the Area 51 prospect within its Tunkillia gold project in South Australia.

Area 51 was confirmed in September last year as a 500-metre gold zone that returned “impressive assays” such as 17 metres at 3.2 grams per tonne (g/t) gold from 77 metres and 45 metres at 0.92 g/t gold from 97 metres.

The new round of drilling will include around 2300 metres of reverse circulation (RC) drilling designed to follow up on last year’s results.

The RC program follows recent success at the 223 deposit, also located within Tunkillia, which confirmed high grades of up to 23.5 g/t gold and broad zones at depth below the current mineral resource.

Barton’s Managing Director, Alex Scanlon, said last week’s results showed the “growth potential” of the 223 deposit and emphasised the limited historical exploration at Tunkillia.

The company believes the 2300-metre program at Area 51 will take two weeks to complete, and it expects to receive assays from its recent diamond drilling efforts at both 223 and Area 51 over the next few months.

BGD shares were down 2.22 per cent to trade at 22 cents at 11:57 am AEDT.
